Just to cheer you on . . . The guys are right. I had very nearly the same experience. Even with an old gasket downin there(and it can LOOK like metal) you will see that V-taper you have. Get in there with something narrow like a small screwdriver (I'm thinking a chisel might score or chip something) and go to town digging it out. The bolt is going to be tough to find (you're not the first one to break one of these), but you might start with Glen Mlarnik at Little Red Tractor Co. He is great to deal with and has gotten me out of a couple of tough jams. Hope this helps.
