Farmall 400 PTO disconnect clutch

A "green" buddy of mine finally saw the light and purchased himself a 400 - his first non-Deere tractor. I stopped to watch him plow with it over the weekend and inquired whether he'd released the "seasonal disconnect" clutch on the PTO. Turned out he had not, so we went underneath to shift it out of gear. When we removed the capscrew that holds the shifter in place we were greeted by a small flood of what appeared to be old 90W gear oil. We quickly shifted the disconnect lever and reinstalled the capscrew which stopped the flow of oil. My question: Is this normal? I'm suspecting the transmission input shaft seal has failed and leaking tranny oil is accumulating in the bottom of the belly casting. My experience is limited to non-TA/non-live PTO-equipped Super series tractors - where the belly is dry between the flywheel and the transmission. Any advice is appreciated! ...Bob M
