Closed center means when the valve is in the center or neutral position, it blocks the flow from the pump. A pressure-compensated hydraulic pump (essentially a variable volume, constant pressure) is required when using closed center valves. On the other hand an open center valve bypasses full pump flow back, at 0 pressure to the reservoir when in the valve's in the center position. An open center valve is required on non-pressure compensated (constant volume, variable pressure) pump systems. Most simple (hence most early) tractor hydraulic systems are open center. Your 300U is open center. A "detent" valve is one which has a detent to hold it in one (or both) non-neutral positions. When a set pressure is reached in the system, the detent releases the valve back into the center position. On a log splitter typically the valve detent is only for the "return" position. It permits the operator to let go of the valve handle while the ram retracts - when the ram reaches the end of it's stroke it automatically releases the valve back to center.
