47 M Charging/starting problem

My M has 12 volt distributer and I have a problem. I got the tractor running great but I by-passed the alternator (didn't know if it worked). I brought the alternator down to the shop and had it tested...it works fine. I thought I would wire it in this weekend. I followed a diagram I found on this sight (had to get a ballast resistor though) and now:

When I turn the tractor over the Ammeter displays positive volts (@12 vlts) then when the engine fires and initially starts (1 second or so) the Ammeter quickly changes to -13 volts or so and the engine dies quickly. Has this happened to anyone before?
