PTO on IH 856

Having a problem with the PTO on an IH 856. Using a spreader to plant and had trouble getting PTO to engage initially; had to work the linkage some to get it to engage. Planted one field and moved to next field and was unable to get the PTO to engage. Has anyone had this problem before? Does this sound like a linkage problem or something bigger? Is this something a somebody with a little mechanical know-how can fix or should we be heading to the dealer? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
