According to the serial number listing on this site under Serial numbers at the left side, the serial numbers started in 1955 with 501. The 1956 models started with 2187. So 1686 W400s were produced in 1955. The production for these was only in 1955 and 1956. I don't have an ending serial number. The tractor was produced in a diesel version which would have been the W400 D. The serial numbers ran in the same series for the gasoline and the diesel versions, so no way to determine how many were diesels. There was probably also a propane version which would also be included in the serial number sequence. The W400 is a decendent of the W-6 and the Super W-6 which was produced throught the 40s and 50s up up until the W400 came out. After the w-400 was the W450. All were similar tractors, just enhancements and more power as the line evolved. The w-6 is the "standard" version of the Farmall M and the later Farmall 400 and 450. The standard means it has a wide front and a low profile instead of the high profile that the Farmalls had which was designed for row crop work. The Standards were mostly used for industrial work and for farming in the plains where main crop was small grains. Hope this helps. It's a short history.
