In my non expert opinion you can use detergent oil. Like you have already noticed it will break lose a lot of the old deposits, so you will need to change it and the filter more frequently. Unless you are in a really cold climate though I would go with a straight 30 wt. rather than 10w30. One drawback you may notice after using the detergent oil might be oil usage, and engine noise from breaking all the old sludge loose and cleaning up the internals.
