New Oil - Black !

Replaced the oil in the A.
I found the old oil to be very light , like water.
It was also very very black.
I put in 10W-30.
Someone then told me, you MUST use a non-detergent oil, a straight 30.
Anyway I dropped the oil after only an hour of running time, the new oil was as black as the old stuff!!
I have read both sides of argument on detergent oils. Some say new OK some say NO.
Should I be concerned of some other problem seeing that new oil is so dirty?
