Valve Lash and Manifold Temp

Is there any relationship of the valve lash clearance to the exhaust temperature? I've got a little IHC LA that spits a flame out the exhaust every eight or so cycles. Was wondering too if timing on an engine would cause this. The engine fires on the 5th crank, no kickback, and sounds good, except for the ankle burner blue flame.

I know if the timing is either too far advanced or retarded (can't remember which), an engine will overheat. Never had this problem before.
