I tweeked the mixture a little last night and ended up with a smooth running engine without flame. Seems I forgot the basic rule that a lean mixture will cause backfire. Although it didn't backfire through the mixer, it was building up what gas it did get and produced the blue flame. On this LA, the best setting without load at medium rpm is one turn out. I was way too lean. Happy to say it doesn't sound like a JD too.
