I installed a alternator on my H, like you I had the same problems with fit. I went down to the local alternator rebuilders and had them fix me up with one that fit great. I think it's a nippon denso alternator with the internal regulator, I did have to disassemble mine and turn the windings 90 degrees so the output wires weren't in close proximity with the valve cover.
There was plenty of room for adjustments. I did haveto build an adjustment bar for the top to adjust belt tension. The wireing was easy, and most importantly it works great.
