IH Mechanical Fuel Tank Gauge [gas cap]

I need to remove the glass lens and clean up the face of an IH fuel gauge pn 365499-R92. I have a new replacement float ready to install and with a clean face, the old gauge will be like new. If someone can coach me on the methodology for removing the stainless steel ring, I would appreciate the help. I am sure there must be some trick to this procedure.
