If I recall on my M.. I turned the platform upside down to work on the forks easier. Then I used a dab of grease to hold the ball to the spring, and the spring inside the socket while I lowered and fastened the forks. Hope this helps. It's been close to 10 years and I only had to replace the 4th/5th gear fork.
