I would not recommend that swap for a whole bunch of reasons; too much power for the bull gears, lack of easy adaptor, etc. The only swap I would even think about is to put the D 206 or a D 239 motor in it. The D 206 is hard to find other than 584, 585, 595, 3230 tractors. The D239 is easier to find. Some swathers 275, 375, 5000's used it. These engines have a ready made adapter from Case IH. The adapter plate for a 544, 664, and late 686 bolts up to the engine and 504 clutch housing. If you use a D239 detune it to no more than 50 PTO HP if you want your bull pinion bearings to survive any length of time. Ditto for the bull pinions, bull gears, and axle bearings. Remember the 460, 560, 660 transmission fiasco. That is exactly what was done to the H & M transmissions. A better solution is to get your D188 engine overhauled. It is a good running engine (once you get used to the glowplugs) and it won't wreck your transmission's final drives.

"Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this
