Lots of conflicting opinions here, so I may as well add my thoughts to the process. While what you can see is important, (cracks, grooves, ridges) what you cant see is equally important. You are also looking in the end looking for a flywheel that runs true. After deciding a flywheel is ok to keep by appearance, I get my dial indicator and magnetic stand out and check it for trueness and runout. If it varies by more than about .010, I get it resurfaced if not, it goes back together as is. If you dont own a dial indicator, I've just given you a good explaination to give your wife on why you need more NEW TOOLS. Good Luck
