I have never had one out, but I always pictured them coming out the front. The worm gear I think is bigger than the steering shaft hole. Plus I think you might have to drop the wheel assembly down so that gear isn't meshed with the worm gear. Don't know for sure. I have replaced that big front seal so that the steering reservoir will hold oil again. I would recommend doing that. I'm sure that old leather seal is leaking and you are probably out of oil.
