Can be a series of problems here. Starting with the u-joints, check the pins and keys, next pull the cover off the steering sector, check the big nut that holds the worm gear on the shaft. This is splined and often gets loose. Also remove the pipe plug on the end of the forward steering shaft and check the bearing and nut on the end of the shaft. They can be loose which lets the shaft move forward and back. Oil should be just to the bottom of the worm gear. If necessary, the worm gear can be rotated, but I think I've only had to do this on one tractor. If oil is kept at the right level, the worm and worm gears don't wear real bad. Lots of times the oil seals need to be replaced too, to keep the oil in the housing. Good luck.
