Pardon the newbe question. What are the typical sizes for square hay bales and the typical sizes for round bales? Generally speaking, how many square bales in a round bale?
Thanks.

My CaseIH 3650 5x6 soft core = 16-17 sq and my NI 484 5x4 soft core = 8 sq. I have ran them beside my JD 337 sq baler on occasion and these figures are always the same. My squares are avg 40" long, not sure of the weight.

I just repackaged a 5x6 into 16x18x36 squares. Given some shrinkage cause it had sit for awhile it made 12 1/2. Thought it would be more than that.

Till then I calculated by weight (just to satisfy my own curiousity) and came out with 30ish. Not so.

Round bales come in 4x4 size through 5x6 foot size, and softcore bales are much lighter than from a new baler with 2000# pressure rollers.

Square bales also come in different sizes, different #'s of hay per bale.

So, 15 - 30 square bales per 1 round bale. Depending on.

That's another of those 'that depends' questions. A lot is local custom. I sell squares that go into the barn in the high 50# range, come out in the mid 40's. 36" long, and highly compressed. Local standard is a 38" bale of the same weight. I've bought and sold all over the US and find that bale length is highly varibale, bale weight isnt. Strictly a function of bulk density.

Same thing with round bales, bulk density and moisture content. With literally the turn of a valve I can change bale weight of my 4x6 (running full size) baler from 1200-1800 pounds per bale. Direct translation to number of small squares. I normally run it set to 4'x4' with 1100 psi on the belts. Bales come out a little over 750#. Turn the pressure all the way up and weight jumps to over 1200# or increase the bale size even 2" and it adds almost 100#. Moisture also makes a huge difference. I've got my skid loader counter balanced for 2800# I've picked up those same 4x4 rolls at 75% moisture and stood it on the nose. Remember, a 1000 pound roll of dry hay at 15% moisture has 150# of water in it. For it to keep without spoilage moisture content and bulk density are directly related.
