Just keeping ya'll updated. How are your efforts going? Lots of stuff drowning here due to wet yr. I am loosing lots of squash and melons. Lost all my potatoes.

Last weekend we manually harvested 200 bushels of corn and 'put up' 100 bushels.

I planted 2 acres of silver queen on March 14 and would be picking now but the crows got every plant. I meant to scatter feed corn to keep the birds out of the germinating corn but didn't. This is the second time this has happened. I gave the crows 1 1/8 ounces of #6 shot for a couple of days but they still got my corn. How do you keep them out? My place is in Gadsden County west of you

Try this for crows: About 5 or 6 days after planting (just before the corn breaks through)put white string 1 or 2 inches above the rows.Done that this year and didn't lose a plant to the crows or blackbirds. Maybe they think your trying to snare them???

Don't know if it works, but my Grandad always takes the first crow he kills, and hangs it upside down in a tree or on a pole near the field. He says that it will keep them away. We have more trouble keeping the crows out of the pecan trees then the garden anyway. Grandad sits out under the pecan trees a bunch of afternoons with the shotgun. Only way I know to keep them out.

SuperHank -
Thankfully I have not had that misfortune. Some folks around me say they just plant "extra" to offset their losses.

Racoons are my biggest issue with corn. Last yr. I trapped out over 30 of them. Once a coon finds the field he tends to bring all his family and friends. This yr. we got most of it out of the field before the coons found it. If and when they return the boys now have .22s (Christmas) and will get $5 for every skinned coon provided one paw is still attached (neighbors eat them - not ME!!).

Other than that most of my efforts are doomed due to weather extremes. Almost lost all my tomatoes due to dry weather in May and now all is drowning due to wet June. Trying to salvage what I can.

Part of the problem is my fields are at the end of cypress bays with clay base. Not real conducive to growing much other than cypress, broomsedge grass and gallberry.

Perhaps we can get together one day for piece of pie. I travel west and south of my place in my other duty as Hunter Safety Instructor for the state.

Regards,

My Mother cooked a coon once. ( thank god only once)
I screamed bloody murder. I thought she cooked up the dog!!
I would have to be pretty hungry to eat one. Cant say I wouldnt eat one (been just that hungry before) but I would have to be starving.

That way the buyer knows it is a coon.

You hit the nail on the head. The folks down the road will buy them all day and all night long. Good cash for the boys, helps me and helps them become better hunters. One shot, one kill.
