Spraying weeds

I planted some Timothy hay last fall late and it's
up and growing fairly well. Problem is I have a
lot of chickgrass and buttercups coming up with
it. Can I spray with a broadleaf weed killer and
not harm the hay or should I wait till later? It
seems the weeds are starting to get the upper
hand and I would prefer that the weeds not set
seed for the future. Thanks, JC

Not sure about Timothy, but on Coastal I wait until may'ish to spray. Spray too early and you can still have an outbreak of weeds. On some grasses less than a year old a light weight herbecide is recommended such as 2,4,D. Again, this may be totally wrong for Timothy or the region your in.

just cut hay before weeds go to seed not a quick fix as it well take time to get ahead of weeds in soil
