Sunflower planting advice

Just wanted to get everyones opinion on planting sunflowers. How and when are mostly what I am concerned with. Some say broadcast and other say rows. Just wanted to what ya'll thought. Thanks for the advice.

For grins I planted mine in rows along field edges. I doubt I will harvest them it was something else to plant based on both of my sons request. We planted 2 rows on either end of the field 40" spacing between rows using small corn plate.

I broadcast sunflowers one year. They grew crowded and didn't get more than four or five feet tall. The flower heads were smaller than if they had been spaced.

The goldfinches seemed to enjoy them though.

Also, they are suppose to improve the soil.
