I am going to sow some sudan grass for pasture this year. I have a John Deere van brunt drill and was wondering if I put the seed in the seeder, my tubes go clear out the back under the step board, or the other compartment. How deep should it be drilled? thanks !!!!! !!

TB, Sudan planting is just about bullit-proof. Set your tension on each disk opener on the 3rd position. There are 5 positions on that rod. this is the same tension setting you would use for Oats/Wheat. Seed depth should be 2 to 2.5 ins. On that old Van-Brunt use the guide on the inside of the lid to set the rate @ lb/acre of seed. Keep in mine Sudan had a tendency to get stemmy when planted light so up the rate some to avoid this. ex Sremmy like almost 3/4 to 1 in diameter for the bottom foot or so , meaning the entire plant will be tough to eat even for old cows! I would up rate by 10 to 15 percent. Swath it down when it starts to boot, That is about chest high. As always fertilize, Sudan will and can use a lot of nuetrients so this can get critical after a # of years. Hope this helps!

we put ours fairly thick and then we graze off strange to see cows go through grass that tall but the next day the have it mowed flat but also watch when you feed make sure cattle are full and don,t turn in too soon and then keep them on it to build up thier abilty to take it .

are u familiar about the prussic acide problem with sudan grass. It can kill cows if they are left on it after a frost but it makes great hay
