Man - that Kim is FANTASTIC!!! Now we have a forum for small boy farm ops!! THANKS KIM!!!!

Now then, I am small time in my efforts compared to full time farmers. For past 2 yrs. been trying to get a U-Pick Operation off the ground. I am just curious what rig(s) others use for planting more than the family garden, your general location and what you plant. For those interested I will post pics from time to time.

Here is my info -
Rigs - Oliver 550 Dsl (tillage & ground maint.), Farmall 140 (planting) & AC D10 II (cultivating).

Located in N.E. Florida. Just starting to cultivate the rows.

Majority of my planting is now done. Planted 400# of red spuds, 5 acres of various sweet corn, 5 acres of peas, 2 acres of beans, 10 rows of squash, 5 rows of okra, 5 rows of beets, 2 rows of cantalope, 1 row of watermelon, 1 row of pumpkins, 2 rows of tomatoes and 2 rows of bell peppers and 1 row of sunflowers for sh*ts & grins.

For house garden I have tomatoes and cukes are planted close to the house for easy access.

May be to late for fertilzing 20 acres of pasture or hay as I see some guys already doing first cuttings.

Hello,
I just saw the e-mail thread regarding your attempt to start a truck farming business. I was wanting to know what success you had and any challenges you discovered along the way.
Thanks,
Ron

I appreciate your suggestion. I would like to see a forum dedicated to farming issues, like what herbicdes to use, how to plant certain crops. For example I am planning to grow grain sorghum for a dove field and I would like any advice I can get. The ground is light sandy loam southeastern Ga. soil and I am fighting a couple bad spots of sandspur. What herbicide will work?

You can get rid of your sandspurs cheaply with lime. For some reason they will not set seed if you alter the ph.Lime heavily and after a year or two,no more sandspurs.

Now that is some beneficial news. Whenever I go to St. Pete Bch. to visit sisterinlaw I dread it. Her place is LOADED with sandspurs.

When we get home no one can get out of the truck until Dad has inpected, picked and generally made sure you have NO sandspurs. DO NOT want that prickly thing on my place.

Next visit to STP will be bringing the lime!!

SuperHank -
Hey bud, use this forum for that!! I wrote Kim asking for the same as your request. We mutually decided to rename this forum Tractor Use & Crops. See Header on this page.

I am have limited experience and seeking others input, most full time farmers have to much pressure on them to produce to assist those of us working a smaller scale.

On herbicides you need to be selective and have specific goals in mind. I use Garlon4 for controlling gallberry in my planted pine stands. I use an ATV mounted 25 gallon sprayer with hand wand also.

Below I have provided an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) link that should help you BEGIN your investigation. Also check with you local county Ag Extension Office.

Regards,
ShepFL
