I don't know if this inquiry is appropriate in this forum but I would like to have access to information about planting crops with my 53 Super H. and 1950 309 Ford 2 row planter. I am currently harrowing in anticipation of planting grain sorghum (milo) and had a problem last year with sandspur. The problem is that it germinated late in the year (september in S. Georgia) even though I planted round up ready corn. I sprayed as directed but the fact that the sandspur germinated late left me with a hardy fully fertilized crop of sandspur in November when the hunting season got going.
I am studying the use of a preemergent trefaln and will ust a 30 inch row instead of 36 trying to shade out the weeds. Has anyone had this problem or is there a better forum to look in?

Hank: I think you will find reducing that row space from 36" down to 30" will help a lot. As JMS said that roundup is only going to kill what has germinated at time of spraying. 36" rows went the way of atrazine.

Treflan is not labeled for a premerge use in grain sorghum. Treflan is a grass and small seeded broadleaf herbicide and will kill or severly stunt grain sorghum. Your best bet is Ramrod (not that easy to get anymore), Lasso or Dual. Lasso and Dual require the use of safened seed, whereas Ramrod does not. Also Lasso and Dual are a Restricted Use Product (RUP) and may require a license in your state to buy (the license is required here). I do not know if Ramrod is a restricted use product in your state or not. Atrazine may also be a product you can use, but it too may be a RUP in your state (more than likely it is) and need a license to purchase. OK My two bits. I don't surf in this forum often, but if you have any questions email me, my email addy is in Tractor Town under 'Haybaler'. You can alos contact your local Extension Agent.

Roundup is a CONTACT herbicide. That means it kills only those weeds it makes contact with. Growing weeds, not those that come up after you spray. You need a herbicide with RESIDUAL action- stays in the soil for a time to kill those weeds that are yet to germinate.
