Can the black plastic like you would use under your house be used to cover round bales? I am looking to add to the herd and will need to try and save as much hay as I can so I don't have to rent more hay fields. I am open to any ideas Thanks Jamie

Well, anything that loses value may be worth protecting if the cost of the protection is not too much, so it depends how long u are going to store the bales, how many bales, how much they cost initally, how much rain/snow u expect, etc

BUT, I wrote for a couple of reasons - I tried putting two rows of bales side by side then with a third row of bales on top in between the two - and covering that with black plastic - was OK until the first 4- mph then it was gone - and I had it tied pretty well -

BUT then I tried a different idea - no extensive results - round bales do store better if you put them on their end, BUT you must protect the top or they will spoil worse than laying them flat. So this is the new idea - I cut a 10'x 10' piece of black plastic - set a round bale on end - put the plastic on like a tablecloth - then run one twine around and tie it on there OPTIONAL: then I would set this bale on top of another bale which was set on end - two bales protected with one piece of plastic. I might try a few more like this nect year

Around here I see a lot of bales stored like below, & I see why now:

Place a bale on end on the ground, and place one 'normally' on top of it. So the bottom one doesn't spoil from the ground, and the top one sheds off the rain/snow better. Kind of makes a big mushroom.

Nothing beats a good tight bale to start with.

Some farmers around here have put down several inches of gravel under there bale storage areas to help drainage. This is on pretty heavy clay. They claim it reduces spoilage considerably.

If your bales are tight, you will not have hay spoilage. I bale right around 1,000 bales a year, they all sit outside, and have never had trouble with hay being wasted. There is snow on the ground when I move the ring, the cows eat every last bit. I'm also generous on the amount of hay per cow, so I know it's not like I force them to eat it or they get nothing else. I wouldn't go to all the expense of the plastic or the hassel of covering and uncovering the bales.
