I need some advice on an older Ford post hole auger. I got my hands on one, and am in the process of cleaning it up and freeing all the joints. Might put new ujoints in the driveshaft, but we'll see. Anyway, I'm looking for a manual for the actual operation of it. I know the hookup and that, but not the actual drilling process. Something more descriptive than turn on and feed down. :)
Also, mine has a couple of extra brackets that I don't see on the others that I lookup online. There is a small arm that comes off the gearbox, and another off the rocking bottom bar of the hitch. It looks like the rear arm may match up to a hole in the front one. I thought it might be just a brace for transport? Or is this some sort of leveling thing?

I've researched what I could online, and just found warnings about the safety of these tools, along with the advice to have extra shear pins on hand. I assume this means the pins that hold the auger bit to the gearbox? Or is there one in the shaft I should be looking for?

Thanks all. I have a good bit of fencing to get up in the next week or so, and I'd really like to be able to use this safely and correctly.

After you do everything else take the cutting edges off and sharpen them up. I use old lawn mower blade welded on to renew cutting edges which are worn down. It's amazing how well it will dig with sharp cutters. You may have to keep upward pressure to keep from going to deep. Also check to see if your PTO shaft is to long. It may be bottoming out and stopping downward travel.

I did think that at first, but I took a closer look, and no, they still have travel.
At this point, I installed the new teeth, and combined with the cleaned shaft, it's running pretty well. I'm still not sure what the top links are for, bu the machine is working well and saving me a lot of time. I have about 70 more feet of fencing to get up, then I can get the gates hung.

After more searching, and some more digging attempts, I'm hopefully on the right track. I found that the PTO shaft was pretty bound in one spot. I suppose this could be one of my problems. Next, I found that the teeth were in pretty bad shape. When I tuned this unit up, I really didn't look at them, figuring there was no way a replacement was still around. As it turns out, they are pretty cupped, and not really able to bite into the dirt, just rub it. A few minutes of hunting, and new ones are on the way. I also got the shaft all cleaned out and freshly packed with grease. With any luck, I'll be boring holes Wed night.

Well, I got her hitched up today and gave it a try. I was going to call it quits for the night, but figured I got it on there, I may as well do one hole to see how it goes. I think the brackets are maybe for alignment? The arm that connects to the gearbox ties into an arm that goes straight up near the front of the unit. I ended up using it to swing the auger back and forth to hit the hole right where I wanted it. I dunno.
As for the performance... Well, I must be doing something wrong. I started with a small hole, lined up the auger and lowered her down. Engage PTO, slowly feed down. Dug right in, all is well. I get about a foot down, and bring it up to clear. Go back down, and she seems to be stopped. I check for rocks, nothing. Drop auger in again, nothing. Shes spinning, but just not getting a bite. Best depth I could make was about 15 inches. I wonder if something is bound up and is not letting the unit swing correctly? It is really stopping like there is just no more movement in it. I'll have to check the shaft out and give it some more time tomorrow.

to drill the post holes, dont force the auger into the ground, set up where you want to drill, lower the auger to the spot, get the bit in the dirt a little BEFORE engaging the pto. use idle speed only. let the auger go in maybe 6 inches or so, then raise it to clear the dirt out. go back in, dig some more, then raise the auger to clean out the hole, be careful so the auger doesnt screw itself into the ground, if you do, its a devil to get out. keep EVERYONE away from the auger and the pto shaft. if you need to clear dirt away from the hole, shut the tractor OFF first. be ready to stop the pto quickly if the auger snags on a rock or root. the auger will remove small stones, but if you hit a boulder, you will need to break it up by hand with a bar. the other guys here will prolly add some more saftey tips too.

Can you post a picture of these extra brackets? They could possibly be mounts for a hyd cylinder for down pressure. Word of caution always dig at low rpm.
