Pullin Trees

When I got our first tractor, my wife said "what are you going to do with a tractor?" Now that we're moving, I was going to sell the tractor but before I could tell Terry that I planned to buy another one, once we got moved, she said "What are we going to do without a tractor?" Quite a change in just a few seasons.

The greatest trick I use my tractor for is pulling trees out. I'm talking about Douglas Fir and Hemlock up to 10" diamater. I use a 100' steel cable attached to the tree about 12 feet up and then through a snatch block pulley that's anchored to a stump or the base of another tree. Before I pull the tree over, I stack some logs up against the base of the tree I'm pulling. As the tree goes over, those logs cause some serious leverage and pop the root ball right out of the ground. I hook the tractor up and pull diagonally to the direction of the fall.

Safety is really important here. Be sure AND ONLY PULL from the lowest point of the tracor. I have a draw bar that attaches to the bottom of my tractor with a pin. That's the ONLY place to pull from. ALWAYS pull with a slow steady pressure and never jerk the line. You can buck a tractor right over on yourself if you break any of these rules.

It sure is sweet to see a big tree come out of the ground and bring its stump with it.

That is a great idea. I plan on buying some land that needs clearing. I now know how to do it.
Thanks.
Oh if you do any more grab a photo.

Great tree removal strategy! I've tried pushing a few over with the bucket on my loader, but I'll give your method a try. I've got a couple of big ones I need to take down. Dealing with the stump later is pain if you just cut it at the base.
