Hi Guys , My neighbor tree trimer has some 3 or 4 year old wood chips mulch next to the orchard grass /timothy /minimal alfalfa/clover hayfield ,, i am about to spread these chips across the hay . any idea of the fertilizer benifit or Worse , Cautions that should be taken.. my barnyard Knowledge sees only good that can come from this ,, Thanx to All who respond , Jim

Woody stuff like cornstalks, wood chips, etc. are good for building up the soil about 5 years from now.

The process of breaking it down into soil components uses a lot of nitrogen, and wood chips tend to be acidic. This means you grass will be starved fro N, you might need to add extra. And if you need to add lime to your soil, that lime will be used up a bit faster.

Then in 5 years or so, your soil will have more organic matter, & the N & such will be returned to your soil.

Wood chips used as bedding are much better, as the manure part will give the N and other things needed by the wood chips, and it is a balanced product.

Thanx Paul , Was hoping To hear from You ,Sowed this dormant field to Alfalfa and orchard /slight timothy Grass In fall of 2005,with triple 19 ,, results :, poor showing of alfalfa? NO timothy thru 06, something very wrong ,, Soil tested early 2007, lime Was at 5.7 ,,all others moderATE TO lOW consequently hauled nearly 3 ton ton acre. AND fertilized according to sample needs Results : timothy and orchard GRASS WOW !!!,paltry Alfalfa matching volunteer Clover in populance.. Field is 95% surrounded by Woods /wildlife .. Most Mulch clearly rotted down ,, thanx , jim
