FEL vs Skid loader question

I have a problem that I need some advice on. I won’t mention any brand names since I don’t want to start a brand war, besides, brands are not the material problem. I’ve trying to figure out if I should buy a FEL with my next tractor purchase. Here are the details: I currently own a 35HP diesel skid loader with about a 36 in bucket and 1200 lb lift capacity. It only has the one set of hydraulics that run the bucket. It works fine for the things I need done around my place such as moving some dirt, gravel, snow removal, etc. It doesn’t have A/C or heat, and is on tires not tracks. I’m going to buy a new 65HP diesel tractor, 4wd, with a cab, A/C, heat, 3 sets of hydraulics, and a joystick control for a FEL. It would have a greater capacity for lifting and a bigger bucket than the skid loader if I purchased a FEL with the tractor. I’m planning on using the tractor for mowing pastures (mine and others for a fee), for doing hay baling (again mine and custom hay baling for others) and any other small jobs I can hire out to do with it. In the future I would like to get a small square bale accumulator and grapple; however, from research on the internet it appears that the grapple would require another hydraulic fitting which my skid loader doesn’t have. So would it be worth while to get the FEL, which would have the hydraulics to run a grapple, have greater capacity, and be able to work in A/C or heated cab, even though I have a skid loader or should I save the money and the headache of having a FEL in the way when I’m using the tractor for mowing, baling, etc?

Double check your existing skidloader- some came with the extra valve in the bank- just not hooked up to anything, and lacking the control handle. My old Case 1530 was like that.

I'd get the FEL. Just cant imagine not having a tractor with one. With that said, I'd start planning on a skid loader upgrade too. While I wouldnt trade having a loader tractor at each farm, the skid steer gets more hours on it moving hay that anything else. But it takes a bigger skid loader. I use a 65hp 1845C Case and only use the FEL when its too muddy to use the skid steer. Only problem I see with the whole idea is using FEL, cab with heat and air, and 4wd, I'd want another 20 hp on the tractor.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! Talked to the skid load dealer, they could attach another set of hydraulics, however, they would cost more than the skid loader is worth, so will not be able to use the skid loader with a grapple. From reading your posts, it's pretty obvious I'd be better off getting the FEL and later deciding if I wanted to keep both or get rid of the skid loader. More money now, but maybe less need to make big changes later.

Thanks for your input.

"they could attach another set of hydraulics, however, they would cost more than the skid loader is worth, so will not be able to use the skid loader with a grapple." Another way of looking at it is you can have a more useful machine that is more valuable to you. I do not look at what a macine is worth on a trade in I look at what it is worth in usefulness to me. If I had my druthers I would prefer to have both. Since my tractor had a loader on it when I bought it I have a tractor with a loader.

Get a tractor with a loader and a quick change bucket. Thats what I have and when I am haying I just drop the bucket. Its nice and easy and the loader stays on for a little front end weight. The loader isnt hard to see around either with the bucket off. My loader is a quick detach but I find myself rarely taking it off since I use it so much.

Some brands of tractors offer a quick attach setup for their loaders (guessing less than 10 minutes to take on or off). This would offer the best of both worlds. It would give you the superior capacity and comfort over what the skid steer offeres. But still give you the visibility and clearance when you wanted it. All it takes is money...

A laoder on a tractor can be great, but it can also be a pain at times. The tractor is longer because of the loader so some place are harder to get into but. My self I would be lost with out at least one tractor with a loader, I ave 2 with loaders and will never not have one with a loader. Skid steers are nice but limited in a lot of things they can do plus a loader on a tractor that size would almost pick up that skid steer
