You can "hotwire" your generator to test it.

Put your tractor in fast idle (generators don't charge at low RPM)

There should be two connections on your generator. Find the one that goes to your battery and ground the other one.

Your generator should be charging at it's full capacity. You should hear it take a load and you should be able to see the voltage increase with a voltmeter.

This is a temporary test and not a fix. If you leave this setup, you will fry your battery. A few minutes won't hurt but constant charging will.

Good luck.

Hi David, Sorry, but I'm afraid I have to go with Tyler on this one. Testing the output of the generator with no load(battery) doesn't tell you much. A bad generator might easily have enough output to power the voltmeter, but be completely incapable of any meaningful output under load. You have the right idea, but do the test with the armature wire connected...Al English

Hi Al
I have had times when a wire was shorted to ground and could not get a reading with arm. wire hooked up. checked gen. and then checked rest of system
