Hydraulic filter in pressure line.

I posted on another board (with no responses) about the inadequate filter on the hydraulic system of my tractor. Published experts contend that filters in the suction line are a poor choice because of the possibility of cavitation. There is no protected area in the suction line for a filter on my tractor. The valve on my tractor is over the transmission/hydraulic sump and placing a filter in the "return line" is impossible because there is no "return line". There is a protected place and access to install a filter on the pressure line between the pump and the valve. Pressure line filters are not low-cost units! Your suggestions, please.

I have installed return line filters on several of my tractors that do not have any filtration. These are spin on units that filter down to 10 microns. They are available in most catalogs that carry hydraulic components. On the other side of the argument, IH did not use any hydraulic filters until 1955. There are alot of Super Ms and Hs (1952-54) with live hydraulics and they are still working.

hydraulic systems that are only hydraulic, usually have a fine filter on the return line to the sump. in these systems the reservuar and the oil in it are always clean and more sophisticated pumps (like piston pumps) may be used.
in systems that combine hydraulics with transmission, however the oil can be contaminated ny transmission particles, so it's better to intall a suction screen (the bigger the better),that will protect the gear pump from the larger particles, and a pressuere line filter to protect the rest of the hydraulic system.

Hi BD, You can put a filter in the high pressure line but there more expensive as they now have to be pressure rated. Filters are installed in the suction side of the pump and have a internal bypass valve incase they plug up thus they can never cavitate the pump. A suction screen can plug but some do have bypass valve. Filters are flow rated so they have to be sized to the system.

As one of the posters pointed out, most tractors the filter is in the reservoir on the pump intake.
If yours doesn't have one be sure and check the parts manual as alot of tractor owners removed them and didn't install a new filter.

Strainer maybe, filter no. if your aux valve is a stackable and is open center, could you have an adapter plate made for a filter with a builtin bypass?

Just my two cents. What good is a filter between pump and valve. To filter trash after it has came through the pump is useless. Most of the particles that need to be filtered are usually created from the cylinders or what is driven and the transmission.

Just curious here, but doesn't the transmission already have a filter, why would it not be adequate?
