Was talking to my dad the other day about some close calls over the years and he reminded me of one that happened when I was about 10. Did all our work with an old JD A. Had a load of hay on the wagon headed for the farm. This was in the early 70's and we were just getting modern phone service in this area, and they were plowing underground wire, in those days they just plowed across the blacktop and left a large bump in the road. I was riding on the load of hay, yeah I know thats unsafe, when the old A hit that bump, going downhill and that hitch pin popped out of the hitch like it was hit with a hammer. Needless to say I did not know what to do, the wagon was picking up speed and going toward a steep ditch. About then the tongue started to dig into the gravel on the shoulder, well I dove off the load, landed in the ditch and rolled to a stop just as the tongue stopped the load and she raised up and dumped the whole load in the ditch. My dad was white as a ghost as he did not see me dive off and thought I was buried under the hay. We got it all cleaned up and we never told mom. Was a lucky day for me though, I had one on dad and he treated me pretty good for a while;>)
