I can't beleive what they have done to our local store.. Seems they are going to cater to the flower planting yuppie element and leave us tractor owners out to dry. If you need a part, you are handed a flyer for their computer online ordering system.
On the plus side, they are clearancing all sorts of good stuff. Last week it was all the Forney Welding stuff, this week it was all the Exide battery cables, including the big heavy ones and ground straps.Might as well stock up, you won't see it there again!
If you are into dumpster diving, seems the stores are also filling the dumpsters with all sorts of stuff that won't be in the stores anymore.. I heard tales of small engine parts andpotting soil by the pallet being tossed. Unbeleivable!
Too bad the management of this company is doing this.. My favorite store is turning into a wasteland!

I've noticed the same situation with Southern States and Tractor Supply Company in my area of Northern Virginia. I guess it's a sign of the times and that's sad.

I know what you mean. I put in 21 years in a similar, although smaller, company. I was the manager of one of the stores for the last 8 years. About 2 years ago The company changed ownership. I watched them make the sort of changes you describe. Finally I couldn't stand any more. I now work in the Parts Dept. of our local JD dealership. It seems to be a trend among the farm store chains.

its a dern shame to hear this.. I was hoping to get a job at our local store next summer. I might be a kid of only 17 but by garsh i know a hydraulic cylinder from a bird feeder pole. Id shure would have liked to show those yuppies what your supposed to know and do instead of painting your toe nails at the front desk...

I feel your pain....but how many N series mufflers do you think they could sell? If you drive up and down our area (upstate NY), you will see a hundred farms shut down for every one that is still working. If you are a modern farmer, where it's all about management, you aren't running a Farmall M for anything.....

I was always amazed at the inventory CT used to have, but the truth is, I stopped driving to them a year ago. I'd rather talk to an expert, even if it is by phone, and then give them the sale, then deal with QFF's brand of hamburger flippers.

I'll miss there nut's and bolts by the pound....that was a deal....

Take Care
Steve

If most of your customers are suburban or exurban types I guess that's what you do to maximize profits per shelf space. Hope the mail order stuff holds up.

I wondered what was going on with them. I just started dealing with them in the last year or so and every time I went to the store it had less equipment in stock. I HAVE however, had pretty good success in mailorder/online ordering. They've had every part in their catalog so far that I needed. Wonder how long THAT will last.

Don't know where you are located but the same thing happened at our store here in NY. Moved to a "new" store but somewhere along the way the name changed to "Quality Farm and Country." The new inventory has "yuppie" written all over it. Tried to get some brake shoes for a John Deere 70 from them. They made a token attempt to order them and then called me and said they couldn't get them. But they got great deals on stuff the suburban folks need.

I use to go there all the time. Every time Central tractor has a buy out , things get worse.Myself and many other people I talk to hardly ever go there any more. It's getting to be like another japanese junk yard , sort of speak. Even the help has went down hill. The help in one of the stores is oriental help , and young kids. I don't have anything against oriental peaple or young kids. But they don't know anything , and can not speak or understand english. Because they are kids , they think it is a big playground , from what I have seen. It is not the helps fault. The help just has to grow up first , before running a buisness. This is what is happening all over this country. They hire these types of employee's because they are cheap. Like I said , they don't know anything. I hope these buisinesses go belly up. If so , they won't be around to take advantage of forieners and kids. This country is heading for big big trouble. How come everyone see's this exept the rich and polititions. We all know the answer to that.

Brace yourself:
They don't want our business any more. You are right, they want the yuppie shopper. They have also closed about 40 stores in the midwest. I think they're going to do a W.T. Grant: gut and strip the stores, loot the company, and liquidate! It's sad. I used to work for them. I was a parts manager (back when they had parts). I got out about two years ago, after the company had been sold for the fourth time in as many years. I miss my customers, and the parts business, but I don't miss the b******t that hit us at every change of management (direction)

We had an old Big Bear store here that was wasting away. They joined the CT family (a Farm & Country) 2 years ago & really stocked up! Wow, I loved it!!! They did a lot of sales. And then, the next year it was one of the 40 that were closed. They sold it out at 15, then 30, then 50, then 70% off. I got some really, really good deals, as this was all 1 year old (at most) inventory. But I sure was sad about it closing.

I've heard before that with Quality at the helm now, I'm probably not missing so very much....

TSC seems to have gone that route a couple of years ago, still a good store, but much more yuppie aware. :)

Brace yourslves here..... . The vast majority of the customers do not own tractors. They want shovels, rakes potting soil and fertilizer(by the 50# bag) Agway did the same thing to us in NY 2-3-4 years ago. You can't even go in and buy a bag of calf grain anymore! Farmer #s may be small but around here they contribute A HUGE AMOUNT of total dollars to the local economy. The people who do not cater to their needs are losing out on a tremendous potential sales market!!!!!

Yeah, AGWAY did the same thing and now they're out of the retail altogether, I believe they sold it to Southern States, or independent operators. And with the so called yuppie stuff the Agway's and QFC's can't compete with the Home Depot types. Agway to me seems to be mismanaged, they run it like an old boy network and when the competition gets rough they bail out, power equipemnt, refineries, petroleum and now retail.
