I have bats in my barn, the are crapping and just making a general mess of things. I just went out by my chicken pen, and there must have been 20 rats of all sizes in the chicken pen that is just what I could see. I put out some poison bait, but looks like I will be feeding the whole neighborhood rat population. Does anybody know of a better way to get rid of rats, and bats. I don't care if bats eat bugs, I just want them out of my barn.Stan

If Mrs. 37 Chief has a garden she would love you forever if you set up a drop pan under the bat colony and caught the guano. It makes great fertilizer. I did this for a colony of brown bats in my dad's hay mow. They always nested in the exact same spot between the rafters. Just cut the bottom off a 55 gallon drum and place it under where they sleep. You contain the mess, they have a place to sleep and they pay you by eating bugs. Everybody wins!

I am not that good of a shot. Don't know if you ever seen a bat fly, but they are all over the place. I would have more holes in my barn roof than dead bats'f any. Stan

Bats do not like light. Put a couple of lights in the area where they are staying and see if it doesn't keep them away.

If it were me, I'd but up some bat houses in a good place a way from my barn.. and then clean up the feed area and put out those blue bait cakes and packets where other animals won't get them. The blue cakes took care of my rat problem at my bar in 2 weeks. be prepaired to pull dead rats out of hiding places..

Yeah , that smell is wonderfull isnt it! I know the 1st year I owned this place and we cleaned the barn, I went trhough 5 pails of bait (I had mice, not rats), about 4 days later there was just that nasty stench in the barn, did not see a mouse again until this spring. Hope fully can getting knocked down again beforew they get as populated as they were. Little suckers sure hurt the insulation in the walls.

The Rats, get rid of all feed sources for them, buy new feed systems if you have to, also, dry the place up so they have no water. Mix, "just one bite" with "Jaguar" rat bait and put bait boxes all over, they get hungry enough to eat it or they will leave.

here is a link to build some bat houses, they do eat a lot of insects, maybe you could place some houses outside the barn to get the colony to move there, then close up the entrance ways so they cant get back in the barn. w w w dot batcon dot org / bhra / economyhouse dot html. for the rats, my neighbor made some wood boxes about suitcase size with a hinged top. drilled a hole in two sides about 2-1/2 inches in diameter. put the poison in the center of the box, smear a little peanut butter in the box for added attractant. the box will keep chickens, racoons ect out of the box, you can set a cinder block on top so the coons cant get it open.

When I was a kid in Kansas our barn had become over run by rats. Rat bait really didn't phase them too much because there was so much grain and feed around for them to eat. After a dry spell we found some were drowning in the water tank over night. We took the hint and my Dad bought some liqud rat poison that we put in gallon chicken waterers. They drank 3 to 4 gallons a night for 2 nights then it tapered off. Never saw another rat there. Tried it again a couple of years later in the chicken house and couldn't find the liqud posion anywhere.

I don't know if it works or not, but my Dad used to say that when they were kids and had rat problems they would catch them in a live trap, singe the hair off and let them go. The smell would make the rest leave. Never tried it, I always used the bait cakes with success, Good Luck, Chris

Hi Stan;
I can sy,pathise with you about the bats, we had a colony of them in our house roof where we used to live. They are protected in England by Law and they cant not be killed nor their nesting places disturbed.
Rat - kill them anyway you can - hate them !
Good luck with your tasks.
Cheers David

The bats are protected in our area also. I have tried noise makers that buzz every 15 seconds, but doesn't seam to bother them. Someome suggested amonia, I may try that. stan
