The biggest city is New Orleans which is on the Mississippi River about 100 miles from the mouth of the river.
The largest farming area is the Northeastern part of the state. It is West of the Mississippi river and runs North and South. It is actually in the old river flood plane and is very rich soil where mostly cotton, corn and soy beans is grown. In the North Central part of the state peaches are a very important crop. In the Southwest (and also in the Northeast) sweet potatoes are grown. Sugar cane and rice are the predominate crops grown in South Louisiana. Throughout the state there is a lot of cattle farming also. Come on down and we'll show you around.

DHunter covered it very well. I just want to add that crawfish, and alligator, are also major industries. To a lesser extent catfish and tilapia. While I'm on a roll, oysters, shrimp, and crabs. A lot of the crab meat eaten along the east coast comes from here. Some citrus between New Orleans and the mouth of the river. Timber is also a big industry. Come pass a good time! Dave

OK Dave I was following you up to the tilapia part then you lost me. I have worked with some honest to goodness cajuns and I thought I had heard all but what is Tilapia? One of way up north Arkies. AD

Fish, grows twice as fast as catfish and can take tougher conditions. Just south of you there is a 300 acre farm, all above ground, quite a few smaller guys around here. Some info at this link

Thanks for the info. We have lots of fish farms in the eastern part of the state and it is mostly catfish. Big problem right now is the Comorant population has got to the point that it is really eating(literally) into their profits. Those birds are on the protected list so not legal to kill them. Over here where I live it is chicken and cattle and this hot weather is really taking it's toll right now.
