I am doing the research for my first tractor. I am looking in the 50-60 horsepower range and don't know a thing about zetor. I am looking for all opinions however relevant on these machines, and the attachements that make sense. I am going to be running a 200 acre mini-farm with some beefers and 3-4 horses and a team of oxen, goats a couple of hogs etc. Will do some plowing and haying, but probably no silage. Does the 50-60 horse make sense or is something more suit

My local Zetor dealer has just sent me a letter saying that the Zetor production lines are rolling again after the factory ran out of money. I think that the government baled them out.

Zetors are really popular here (S Wales, UK)because they are cheap, particularly the 4 wheel drive versions which suit our hillsides. I also get the impresssion that they are easy to fix. The quality of your local service dealer is everything..if you have one. Mine is just 5 miles down the road :-)

One drawback - old Zetors are worth approximately nothing, whereas old Ford or Massey are sought after.

I am biased and I would not own a Belarus or a Zetor. I do not particularly like John Deeres either. My opinion is that a tractor is a machine that should be trouble free and render good service year after year until there is at least 7000 hours on it. Buy either a Ford, Case or IH. Find one of the above in the 80 to 100 horsepower range that has less than 3000 hours. Make certain that is well maintained and has been sheltered from the environment. Do not fret over the price. If the tractor is in excellant condition the premium that you pay in purchase price will be forgotten after you have received continued service from the machine. If you buy one of the cheap imports you will have to remind yourself of the "bargin" you got when you are spending money to try to keep the thing going. The cost of ownership over the life of the tractor is what you should be focusing on. Used implements for the 80 to 100 hp tractors are no more pricey than for the smaller tractors, the demand is less. You can perform a smaller task with a larger tractor but you cannot perform the larger task with a too small tractor. The efficiency of the larger tractor is a major benefit.

The First time I check back in months and sombody has a Zetor Question....Yep EEE
Buy a new Zetor,,,,They are the best not just for the money...But If you priced them lately you will see that they arnt that much cheaper....Heavier and Stronger then the comp.
Compare the weight of a 55hp Zetor to the weight of a 55hp ford or the like....You will see..... ..If your looking for a old Zetor I cant help you much..BUT
Did you keep up with the Kosovo retreat???
Those people were on old Zetors that had been shot up and still managed to get out of dodge..
Ask Buzzhead or my old rival Bill,,,If he will be nice..... ....Be a Man BUY A ZETOR!!!!

David Here's my $0.02 and thats about all its worth. I run a small, cost ineffective but enjoyable farm of 234 rocky acres. I use a 2600 and 3600 Ford, 32 and 42 hp respectivly. From haying, combine work, bush hog duties to work in the woods, I never run out of hp only weight. A tractor from 40-60 hp should do most anything you have described, as long as round bales are not in your future. 4wd is nice but ads a lot to purchase price and upkeep. As far as the Zetors I personaly recommend avoiding them. The low purchase price is sure attractive but the relibality is just not there. A friend tries to farm with his, thankfully he is a machinist. I am a true blue oval fan, but I believe you can buy a good tractor from any of the big 4 mfgs, New Holland, Deere, Case and Massey Ferguson. Hope this gives you something else to think about.Let us all know how you make out. Best of luck, and happy farming. Roy.
P.S. This may be and older tractor site, but there is a lot of knowledge providing sound advice on most any subject comming from these boards.

The 50-60 hp. range should fit what you need, unless you are doing round bales on hills.Look at the weight of the tractor also.If you are thinking about a loader now or later go with MFD.Now as for Zetors: There are quite a few around here(S.Ontario)of all sizes. They seem to work good for people that maintain them correctly. The new ones(under 100 hp) are sold by John Deere below the equator as the 2000 series, just painted green and yellow.Make sure you have a good servicing dealer that you can trust.

Bottom line is that you should buy what most people in the area have and what you can get good dealer service and parts for. That judgement is limiting people to a smaller number of manufacturers every year as mergers go on and on.

We have a couple of people with good experience with Zetors, but most Zetor owners are really unhappy. This is an old tractor forum, and most people here will say you are better off buying an older US-built machine.

Redfan is an Aussie, so he gets a pass on the US-built. Then there is a good group of Canadians, too, so maybe I shouldn't have said US-built at all. It's just too complicated for me.
