"Right now the price of oil is $98.88 and falling. And the price of gas is close to what it was when we were at $147/barrel. Can you say gouging?

(They have extended energy trading for today because of Ike.)"

The wholesale price of gas here in NC went up about 20 cents, but some stations jacked the prices way up. Some kept them based off of what the actual wholesale price was. The NC attorney general and the feds are opening a price gouging investigation. I feel sorry for the people who were told wild tales and started panic buying. A lot of them threw a bunch of money away.

OK, all types/ energy have come up for discussion now. Two items please:
1. Why does drilling have to take place in Arctic Natl Wildlife Refuge? What does that say about us if we go drilling there & cannot leave anything untouched?
2. What is so good about building more nukes when there is no really good plan to dispose of the waste? The last I remember hearing, there was a crack or something in Yucca Mountain. Something wasn't quite right with Yucca Mountain. Will end my $.02 right there. Mark SW Wis.

we in america have disturbed almost every square inch of the american mainland. we have leveled it, contured it, drained it, covered it with concrete and asphalt, and we are worried about the alaskan wilderness where 99% of us will never visit .#1even if we do drill it will only affect small areas #2the carribu will learn to go around or across like the deer do.#3 the alskans want to drill so again why not.Paul

I just filled up my truck here in Michigan. $4.20 per gallon. One station dropped the price down when a TV truck showed up. If you think people aren't taking advantage of the situation, you aren't living in the real world.

Ya, just think if we had oil coming in from the East Coast, and California, and Alaska. And just think if we had more refineries all across the country, instead of being so concentrated in the Gulf region. Wouldn't it be great if we had all these other sources to get us through these times of storms and short-term lack of production in the south? Yes, it would be nice.

Drill here, drill now. Build refineries all over, build nuclear power plants all over. If people want to erect millions of windmills across our plains, I think that's ok too, but more than likely unnecessary. And if people want to drive electric cars, they will require much more electricity than we are currently producing, so clean, dependable, nuclear power plants will be required, as well as more clean burning coal-fired plants.

at time there many refineries and steel mills in area of chicago and gary in. i think most of them are closed now. having refineries all over the nation would make good sense and create jobs too.

With a big part of the refineries shut down it has caused a shortage ofsome types of gas. There is a shortage of $3.xx gas but no shortage of $5.xx gas.

Only about 20% are shut down and I see no reason why they would stay down for very long. They had only been running at 80% capacity as demand has been down.

Can buy all the gas you want at $3.59 and diesel is $3.81 with no lines here in the midwest.

Unfortunately most refineries are near the coast because oil comes in by tanker.I dont remember hurricanes affecting the price much 40 years ago.

20% of the nations refining capacity is located in the greater Houston area. They are shut down and will be for an unknown amount of time. Of course the prices will rise and supplies will be short.

Another common statement on here, the President can't do anything about fuel prices. He lessened some of the EPA standards so we can buy from sources that were previously banned. But since he did it after the speculators got a hold of it, we'll be paying a premium for pollution gas.

Are you aware that speculators make money when oil prices fall too? From this, and your previous comments, I take you don't.

Speculators are necessary in a free market economy, but you must not undertand why. They are the "barometers" and leading indicators of supply and demand gluts and/or shortages. If the oil companies were free to bring oil to market as they wished, which they are not now due to governmental restrictions, they would use the information they get from speculators to increase or reduce supply as natural market forces dictate, and that would keep prices much more steady than we have seen over the past few years.

I reccommend you go to the library and check out a book on basic economics. You'll better understand what's going on around you and will aleviate much of the consternation and frustration you feel about things you currently don't understand.

Repsectfully,

Brian

It's not just with gasoline. Imagine the price of heating fuel this winter. It just simply has to do with all the oil mongers being involved in the government. Actually it's people with money controlling the money and taking more than their fair share and letting all the little guys take it in the #$%. I like the idea of the little man paying a little less and the rich man paying a little more and everything evens out with a surplus that way. Rich people can afford to give some extra money away for taxes, fuel, food and stuff but poor people cannot. Until every person in this country agrees on something like this the whole country is just a scam. Look at all the blatent abuse of the system, pork belly spending, coincidental war contracts whereby our "elected" officials stand to make money off of their decisions that are supposedly for the betterment of our nation and the world. I think the problem is the love of money, period! These people are doing all they can to get as much money as they can and my belief is that they are trying to do genocide in a sneaky way. They make it obvious they are killing people in different countries but not here. They do it by nickel and diming us to death and letting us suffer the consequences be it death, illness, bankruptcy, forclosure, kids going hungry. I hear a lot of people complaining about one thing or another but I think it scares most too much to just look at the big picture. Maybe if more people did then we could band together and change things. Who am I kidding the new world order is coming whether we like it or not and most accept it,that's why people complain but don't act. I hope the gas prices rise to the point that there are riots and people banding together against the government and trying to turn this country back into what our forefathers invisioned. I want to clarify that I am not against this great country, just the luke warm, money hungry, half baked,FAKE government. Yes, I said fake,as in not working for the people like they are said to but the people working for them and if you really think about it are we doing any better than the african slaves were. No, it's just alot sneakier how they do it. If you don't like high gas prices or the price of anything I invite you to look at the big picture of what is going on in our government and SPEAK UP and we can change it. Don't say "elections are coming up and that will help" because that's a scam too and our current administration already has enough candidates in the running that we are sure to have a future like the present. It's the age of psychologicalwarfare and you'd best take note of what's going on besides high gas prices. Go talk to dirt poor people and see how the prices of EVERYTHING has gone up and minimum wage stay the same.Make no mistake, the new world order is on the way unless "we the people" do something drastic in masses.

New World Order? So you're a conspiracy theorist and a communist?

So people have no free will, is that what you are saying? I think people are free to choose whatever lifestyle they desire. Anyone can go to college these days, you don't have to be rich. Anyone can get a government backed loan and get a degree. I have not done that, but then again, I'm not belly-achin about rich people keeping me down either.

Grow up, and look in the mirror if you want to point the blame at someone. You sound like a whiny child. I'm tired of hearing it.

You're so foolish you don't even realize what you're saying, "Rich people pay more, poor people pay less". That already happens kook! It's called taxes. The top 50% pay 95% of the taxes. And you don't even appreciate them carrying the burden for you.

You'll never be happy and you'll always blame someone else for keeping you down. Crappy way to live your life out, but uyou can if you wish. Or get up, get an education, and go make more money. Simple as that.

The conspiracy has nothing to do with theory,it is proven. You guys are obviously on the other side of the fence and don't see the things that are really going on in front of you. I think you oughtta stop being so afraid of the man and speak up for injustice. You think anyone can go to college or choose whatever lifestyle they want. You're just plain wrong and someday you'll realize it. As far as someone keeping me down, yeah they have and in every imaginable way. People are nieve to it until it happens to them then they know how it feels. I think you guys are just a bunch of people who have had it pretty easy overall so don't know what some people are going through while you whine about high gas prices. I bet you support the wars too! You are no patriots, patriots would be against all the crap that goes on. As far as rich people paying 95% of the taxes, of course they do but the percentage of their money they pay in is way less than the 20-30% or more than the little guy pays. Admit that your government has failed you and it will lead to a better life for you and others.

I paid $3.27.9 on Friday for Exxon regular. That same station was up to $3.94.9 at the highest point. Do the math. A few off brand stations were a little less but I buy Exxon whenever I can because I'm a long term stockholder. You don't own any oil stocks?

Why should you have your hand in my pocket for your investment?

But the supply exists - you can get as much gas as you need, just pay the price. If you're old enough to remember early 70's first gas 'shortage' the government price and supply controls attempt with Dems congress spread the pain- you could get gas on alternate days, all the stations got rough 80% of what they pumped previous year, prices werre not allowed to go above figurer from previous months, government inspectors had job security enforcing the rules, economy dropped bad because people couldn't get to work or get stuff delivered unless they went 'black market' for fuel. That was a experiment not repeated for next fuel crisis- political science graduates working for Liebural congressmen couldn't deliver fuel, so don't put them in charge of supply, let experienced providers of fuel get it at whatever it costs to public, no early gas station closings, adjust price to reflect actual value of dollar and supply of commodities cost plus a bit of speculaton on future supply.
