all was turning well after the crank, rods and head were assembled, the crank was newly reground, assembly was done with stp oil treatment, and some mell motor build lube mixed,as we were stabbing the engine, both clutches were aligned ,both went in ok as well, thenm the flywheel also went in,thats clearly visible thru the bottom open hole for adjustments, nothing looks bent or torn up,,as the bearing and pilot shaft were aligning,it started to get harder to put in,but it went,it seems the last 1/2 inch was the hardest, but it all went together,it seems that when i bumped the starter,it mnade a little hop,but then again 1 battery is a little low, could my starter be the problem?or could it be this may be the way they just fit together after being separated?the flywheel is still movable up to 2 teeth thru the timing hole at the side of the tractor also underneath,i did notice that the flywheel has been engaged or it is stuck with the 3 prongs inward also, could this be the reason why its hard to turn over right now?i think i'm going to pull the starter back off, maybe its hung, but all shafts went into place too as this 6030 was being rejoined at the cab area, any thoughts on what could be holding up?thanks in texas, maybe i'll just sell my old toy,but i kinda like hearing it run too

It sounds like something is wrong. We didn't have trouble with it being tight when we overhauled Dad's 6030.

BUT, after cranking it up for the first time - it ran perfect for a little bit - and then started making a light hammering noise up on top...

After agonizing over what it could be for a day or two, pulled the head off - and found a small BB sized pellet of metal had gotten in there - not sure if dropped something into the intake manifold while it was off - or a piece of casting broke loose or just what - but buttoned it back up and it was fine after that...

Did you torque all the bearing caps? See if the engine can be rotated with a pinch bar at the flywheel. If you can rotate the engine with the bar your batteries may be the problem. Charge them over night and check the electrolyte in each cell with a hydrometer. Specific Gravity should read 1.260 or better and each reading should be close to one another. If one reads 1.100 discard the battery. Hal
