Just curious - what tractor would you get your wife for her birthday? Any suggestions are welcome and there are no incorrect answers.

My wife asked me one time if I had ever considered committing adultery. I bought her a handgun for her birthday. Then asked her if I would ever consider adultery knowing she owned a Ruger. She seemed pleased.

Never got asked that question by Nancy.

When we got married, she owned more handguns and shotguns than me and she knew how to use them.

Both of us had put up with a lot of abuse from our ex-spouses from the first marriage.

Made no sense to either of us to go through it again.

We are still 'getting along' pretty good after 20 years and 2 months.

Always be thankful for the one who loves you.

I actually got my wife a JD 4010 (no, not THAT 4010- its a new "compact utility") for her 57th birthday. She was thrilled! She would run a couple of my junkers, but they were all diesel, little hard to start, etc.- she suggested it a couple weeks before her birthday, 'cause they were on sale at the local JD emporium, and she thought it would be real handy around the horse barn. Told her I would check it out, came home with the sad news that they had just sold the last one that morning. I managed to leave out the part about me being the buyer. Had it delivered on her birthday, backed it into the garage and put a big yellow bow on it and a card about my omission in saying who bought the last one, so she saw it when she got home from work and opened the garage door. We both love that little guy- about the handiest rig around.

Your results may vary.

Did a Google search on the compact JD 4010.

That is a handy little tractor.

Full hydraulics, PTO, 3 point hitch, and 18hp.

I can see why your wife was thrilled.

Much better tractor than two of my old B's.

Very interesting suggestion.

I opened the Tractor Photos link and took a look at some of the Cockshutt tractors.

Those are nice looking tractors.

"Flat spokes" are actually what's left of the steel wheels, just plain old cutoffs. I do like the look of them, though!

I use a Kodak EasyShare Z760 which is 6.1 megapixels and can record video as well. I'm happy with it.

James, a few days ago she asked about shipping a JD Mc from Oregon. Think that she might have been hinting and you didn't read the post she responded to. She sounds like my wife. I bring home a tractor and she wants to know how soon she can use it. Good luck in whatever you decide.

She did mention your MC crawler.

We decided it was a little too far from home for us.

We have bought tractors and equipment in Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

No excuses, but the price of the four letter word (fuel) definitely impacts a lot of our travel plans.

More fuel burned on the road means less fuel available for the farm tractors.

Simple economics.

Know what you mean about fuel. I have to go about 250 miles to pickup a balewagon and I am waiting for someone to have something to haul close to where I need to go to help pay for fuel. There has to be something close that she would like. Sounds like she would like just about anything you got her.

Now that"s the way to rake hay!

Really like the flat spokes.

Tractor sounds good too.

I have been considering a video camera to record "action" movies.

Thanks for the video.

Yep, she still married me - even after all the spare $$ going to old tractors instead of an engagement ring! She is for sure a keeper and gave me a beautiful daughter this February. I can't wait to get up to ND to get some pictures of my daughter on some IH tractors!

Thank you, James, for your kind comments! I'm glad you found the one as well.

Here's some action shots:

Nancy really does enjoy driving her tractors.

third party image

Fourteen years ago we took my 65 Chevy truck with a 16ft trailer and drove from Dallas to Gosport, Indiana.

We picked up her dad's JD 48A shown above and brought it back to Dallas.

Used it to mow the pasture here in town.

That was the beginning of our collection of JD tractors.

She also drives her 51M around the farm to mow the yard and a few other spots.

She has 'dropped hints' that she would like to rake hay this year.

Life sure is sweet and simple when your wife likes tractors as much as you do.

Bought this one for her when we still just dating... still haven't been able to get her in the driver's seat, though.

She will run this one and did a couple years ago:

I had her convinced to run a tractor last year and then somehow she became an expectant mother
Hoping this summer to get her into this one, if there's any hay to be cut:

You are one lucky man!

If your wife-to-be still married you after you gave her the old IH for an engagement present, she really and truly loves you.

I am at a loss for words. Don't know whether to say 'love is blind' or 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' when referring to the old IH.

Just kidding. I like the old tractor with the sickle mower, paper pulley, and hand crank.

My dad's tractor was a Farmall Super C with a hand crank.

One of the proudest days of my life was when I cranked that tractor using the hand crank.

Since that day my right arm has been 1" longer than my left arm.

Your other IH is also a good looking tractor.

Bet your 4450 has no problem running your baler.

I do hope you have hay to cut this season.

I have been waiting 6 months to start using our old tractors and hay equipment once again.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

James ---

Those old IH tractors have electric starters....don't take much money to make them work.....

But now that.....I belive you said hay field..... don't you know gas is over 4 dollars a gallon looks like you wont make the cost of one pass of gas.....and you got to rake 4 passes to get one small windrow.....and then bail it.....

come to Ohio, I'll show you a hay field.....Don

Re: Birthday Present for the Favorite Wife in reply to Don L C, 05-22-2008 19:12:46
My dad's Super C did have an electric starter.

It was turned by a 6 volt battery.

Seemed like every time he needed to use it the battery was 'down' and he would use the hand crank to get it started.

Heard a lot of 'colorful' language involving the use of the hand crank.

I usually parked it on a hill and employed the old 'roll start' method, at least when he was not around.

You are exactly right on the high price of fuel.

Fortunately our hay meadow produces enough hay for Nancy's horses.

The cost and/or availability of 'suitable' hay was a decisive factor in putting up our own hay.

I probably will not live long enough to recoup the cost of all the old tractors and equipment.

However, Nancy is pleased with the quality of hay produced for her horses and that is better than money in the bank in my opinion.

We can spray, fertilize, plow, plant, and cut by our time schedule and not around the convenience of someone else.

That was one of the most frustrating situations that my dad had to deal with when he was 'running cattle' on the farm.

It was simple economics for the hay man; no money to be made on a small hay meadow.

Just a couple of years ago we could afford to keep the tanks full on our tractors.

Now we plan which tractors are going to be used from week to week.

The one being used gets 5-10 gallons as needed.

Since we are 'out in the sticks', we are concerned about independent petroleum recyclers (gas thieves) finding an untapped energy source.

I will agree there are a lot of good hay fields in Ohio.

I have a lot of respect for folks that make their living farming, whatever their crop(s) may be.

My grandfather was a cotton farmer, fur trapper/trader, and raised cattle.

My father was a cotton farmer and raised cattle.

If I had to make my living from farming, I would probably starve to death.

However, all of my coworkers will agree that I am outstanding or out standing in my field.

Yes to both; Nancy is my 'favorite' wife and there is more to the statement.

Our 20 year marriage is the second for both of us.

My 'former' wife and I were together for 19 years.

She decided to marry my best friend; I sure do miss him.

No two people ever deserved each other more.

They divorced after a couple of years and if he lives long enough he will be paying child support until he is 62.

Her mother frequently referred to me as 'My daughter's first husband'.

Fortunately for me, my best friend introduced me to Nancy before he married my 'former' wife.

Nancy and I got married 3 months after our first date; that was only because I had to wait 30 days after my divorce was final.

Twenty years and 1 month later we still 'get along' pretty good.

She is not only my 'favorite' wife but also my best friend.

The LA is a unique looking tractor. We visited with a man last week that had both the L and LA.

He said that they were somewhat difficult to 'mount' and 'dismount'. They are still a 'neat' tractor.

Good choice; especially if she likes it!

Actually, I bought one exactly (May 23rd) a year ago; it's a 60 inch as opposed to the pictured 66 inch. It cut my mowing time from 3 hours to one and a half. Love it!!! First wife's birthday is Sunday, May 25th (61 yrs) and her present has been in cabinet above computer for a couple of weeks; can't say what it is; couple of blabber-mouths who frequent these forums know her.
