Where and how do you add gear oil to the final drive on a Farmall Super A. I looked all over last night on mine and could not find a plug hole to check, add, or drain the final drive. I thought I was going nuts. Maybe I am

Checked mine this weekend and had to add to one of the 140's. Just above the pan there is a 1in plug that takes a 1/2 in socket. Take it out and the oil level should be even with bottom of hole. I had to use a funnel with a long tube into the hole to add 85 wt gear oil. As far as draining, what a pain to remove the pan and replace the gasket. Has anyone used a siphon or added a drain plug at the bottom?

Hi Tim, It is easier to ask the question here on the tractor board , than to waste time looking for something. Alway's remember there has to be someone to ask question's and other's have the answer's. It makes life interesting. Cheers, Murray

Plugs are IN FRONT of the axle on both side just above the pan bolt line. holds 1 3/4 pints each side...

To drain, you have to remove the pan. To check the level or refill, there is a 1" pipe plug, should have a square recess that fits a 1/2" ratchet very nicely. It's located on the inside of the final drive at the bottom of the casting, just above where the pan bolts up. On the right side it's just behind the axle, on the left just ahead. Each side hold 3 pints IIRC.

I can not beleive I could not find that last night. I swear I looked close in the area you discribed. I have ordered the books on this unit but have not recieved them yet. Thanks for the reply, I will look again tonight when I get home. I guess it is possible someone painted over dirt and crude build up and I just missed it. I will scratch around better this time. It has to be there.

Tim, I just saw Rootsy's post up above. Don't know what I was thinkin'. He's right, the plugs are forward of the axle on each side. If you have a swinging drawbar, they're right behind the drawbar anchor bar. On the other matter, I just had a look at the book, and it does call for three pints on each side.

Hey thanks guys. I have a feeling the hole is hide under a "tie bar" that is bolted about in the location you are talking about. I will take it off this evening and look with confidence that i am looking in the right area. I thought for sure it had to be somewhere there on the inside of the final drives but got tired of standing on my head. You know how it is getting introduced to a new old tractor. Thanks for the info folks.
