actually they are called "jerusalem donkeys" i think. Smaller than regular donkeys. Already tame and the female is pregnant and a neutered male comes with her.

Here is my question, how hard is it to care for a donkey if you already have facilities and hay for cattle?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated because I need to be sure of what I am getting into here!

I don't have any personal experience with donkeys, but have been told by many they will run the coyotes off. They are a pricey item in S. Texas where they raise a lot of sheep because they keep the coyotes from getting the lambs.

As lawn ornament livestock go, lil' donkeys and burroes are pretty painless. I've seen a few that have been kept as companion animals for horses, and they seem to be very gentle creatures that are real good at taking care of themselves- they graze and they poop, and walk around a little in between. Not nearly as finicky about hay quality as horses...

Our miniature donkey was good at eating the hay wastage from our horses and cattle, he was also good at picking on them and getting back up after getting the snot kicked out of him after he went to far (all the other animals were easily 4x bigger, yet he still thought it was fun to pick fights) Desipite the constant pestering the horse did actually miss him when he was sold.

If he saw any animal smaller than he was he would drop his head to their level and chase it until it left, the chickens slept well with him around but he kept the cat living in terror.

A friend of mine wanted 3 4X5 rolls of hay from me to winter his 2 donkeys. He wanted me to deliver it and drop a roll in the pasture every six weeks. Not in a feeder, just out on the ground to let them eat and waste what they wanted to. Surprisingly enough, he was right. They would eat a roll every six weeks and wasted very little of it. It was always fun to take a new roll to the pasture. They would fight over that big roll of hay for an hour before they would settle down and start eating. One on one side and one on the other would not do them. They circled round and round biting each other on the rear end until they got tired and would finally settle down and eat.

You have a choice, Donkeys [but not the entire male] Dogs and Alpacas. If you hit the search engine for guard animals there is a lot of information on each.

Do some reading for yourself. I hear they are a lot more prone to founder and some stomach problems when they get into fresh greens. I think if you read a little and pay attention to what youre doing, you'll be fine.

You'll need to get a copy of Jerry Clower's instructions on giving a mule an enema

Some people keep donkeys around here to keep the coyotes away. Don't know if it works or not.

yea, one of the points of gettin' them is to keep rascals away from the chickens that we want to get.

We've been thinking its kind of silly not putting this treasure of a piece of land to a little better use. We all love fresh eggs and that has grown to new corral area with new building for chickens and donkeys.

I know a couple people with them. They are really nice animals and really do not take any extra care then anything else would. However I have heard that they can get a little mean, but I guess that could be with any kind of animal. There are always a few bad apples in a bunch.
