I just picked up a JD 3020 and not sure what the year is. I believe I have located the serial number which is "1111R074403R". Is it the numbers after the first "R" that determine the model year? If so, then would this be a 1965 model?

Thanks
Chaz

Yes, I am in the hunt for all the manuals now that I have the model year nailed down. The previous owner in fact is 74 years old and was using the tractor to mow 30 acres in season and drag a parking lot when it snowed. But unfortunately monthly medical has caught up to him and money is the biggest issue in his life today. I only wish I would have had the funds available to also buy the 709 chopper he is selling. I intend to fix what needs fixing and clean her up real good but I think this 3020 wants to farm.

NO NEED to "hunt" for the manuals. DEERE Techpubs @ 1-800-522-7448 will have them all, hardcopy, or CD.

It can do lots of good work for you in the next half century and it cost you no more than a much smaller "utility" tractor. It won't be especially economical on fuel, but it will start in very cold weather.

Hey Keith, thanks for the quick reply. Mine is a gasser, that I would says is in "good" condition, runs and starts good and everything appears to be working. Needs tires. Shopped for about a month until I found this one and gave $4,500. Considering what I saw while shopping that was in worse condition with asking prices of over $6,700 I thought I got a reasonable deal. But until you work these classics a few hours it is always hard to tell what you got. One thing I am sure of is that the guy I bought it from knows more about the tractor then I do. I am certain there will be some surprises.

Now you must get the proper operator's manual, and the shop manual and parts catalogs (be sure to match the SN on all three) so you can learn more than the seller has forgotten.
