Finally got a good day in today, got 42 acres planted and sprayed. The field was in good shape. That 42 acres has more soil types than Carter has pills. It has peat, black gumbo, sand and gravel knolls, clay silt, and everything in between, can't hold a straight furrow if you tried when plowing.
The old JD 730 D has to earn it's keep around here, no shiny paint job for this one. I'm pulling a White 5100 8x36"planter, the duals really help and don't matter if one row gets planted in the dual wheel track. The 730 has only one hyd outlet in the back so I put a hyd splitter to run everything on the planter, works great. And besides, the fuel consumption is no problem, planted the 42 acres on about 8 gallons.
Hope to get the rest of the corn in by Saturday, and then start beans, hope you guys can keep going too.

My neighbor just bought one of those 8 row White 5100 planters. He had a 4 row 5100.

They do a good job. Nothing wrong with the planter or your tractor. It's all about getting the job done.

Gary

Atta boy, Dave!

I like the way you do things. No where in the rule book does it say that ya gotta have a $180K tractor to throw a little corn in the ground. :>)

Thanks for the pictures!

Allan

Hey Allan,

I know it is the wrong color of tractor for you, but what can I say, it gets the job done. Had the old girl for over 20 yrs. now and only put in a clutch.

Great looking job , I have a 720 and like yours it almost makes fuel, did all my plowing and discing with it. Talked one day about trading it for something with a cab and a/c because lung trouble is in my family, both my dad and wife said no way, save your money up and buy outright but you can't get rid of the JD. I'm glad they are both wiser than me.

Great pictures, can't say i have ever seen a 2cy JD pull and 8row. Dad and grandpa ran a 60 and 720 diesel for years, like you say it was easy on fuel. Really nice planter and JD is straight as an arrow, bet its a descent load though, running that fan plus pulling eight rows. Happy planting.

I bought the planter at an auction 3 years ago and was thinking the same thing, that maybe it might be to much planter for the tractor. But I thought I would try it and it did fine, not short of power at all. The duals help carry it over the loose soil and roll easier. The hyd pump for the fan doesn't take any power at all, so that wasn't an issue. I really was surprised that it handled it that well.

A little over 5 acres per gallon isn't too shabby! Nice rig you have there.

I only farm 250 acres, so I can get by with the old stuff. I also raise hogs and beef cattle and contract the township road maintainence.
