Gary or someone in the area: My daughter is going to Iowa City, IA while working as an intern at the Univ. med school. She has a fairly new 2 wd car and is worried about getting around in the snow and the effect of salt on the car. She is thinking about getting an older Southern vehicle with a good body and maybe be it still being in good enough shape to sell when she leaves. We are thinking 4wd small truck or SUV or a front wheel drive car. Do they still have studded tires up there? She is cool to the idea of putting on chains. They have told her the snow and salt season is about 6 months. Any advice will be appreciated.

We will be visiting her and seeing the sights. Noticed on the road map there is a farm museum south of IA City. May have a chance to eyeball some of you.

On another note, we just gor back from visiting her in Mobile, AL. Wettest city in the US and it didn't rain there last week. We drove down through south GA and south AL. It is DRY. Farmers below Corlele, GA were planting crops in the dust, probably cotton, peanuts and soybeans. Some were running center pivots to get the crop up which is bad. I'm sure those guys would rather see that expensive system sit idle. I think they have wells but I did notice one place with 2 or 3 ponds in line, all full. I don't think they are going overboard on corn, though west of Bainbridge, GA there was corn a foot high. Near Bainbridge there is a sweet corn processing operation, their corn was waist high and tasseling. Obviously a special variety. They were watering it.
In spite of all the dry weather one guy managed to get an 8 wheel tractor stuck in what must have been the only marshy area of a large field. The area is coastal plain and rolling enough not to need tiling IMO.

KEH what she will need to get around depends a lot on where she is going to live. There are a lot of 2wd cars on our roads. Most have the 4wd for there own driveways.

Most times in town the streets are kept pretty clear. The county and Iowa dot do a good job also.

When the weather is bad take the bus. The university has an great bus system.

Every winter varies here in Iowa. Some years we may only get a few inches of snow. Others, like this last year, we get a lot of ice and snow.

If she keeps her car fairly clean the salt effect is minimal.

My niece is a nurse at the hospital and she lives within walking distance of the hospital.

If she comes during the summer and gets use to it gradually she will get along just fine.

When she gets here I can give her my phone # so she can call if she has any problems.

I am only 20 minutes from the hospital.

I should have mentioned also that I have a daughter, 2 sister in laws, a brother in law and several friends that work there.

Get me her name when she gets here and we will make her feel at home. Do you know what department she will be in?

Gary and Kevin,

Thanks for advice. She is going to be in Pediatric Cardiology. The house she is looking at is in a development at the edge of a corn field 4 miles from the hospital. Mostly a 4 lane road to work. May not get that one, problems with poor work, housing inspector said all the concrete work in that development had bad concrete.

The dry area I referred to had rain yesterday and last night. Rain here now, needed, but i want to cut hay.

a front wheel drive is ok during winter in Iowa and studded tires are legal for winter months. I would reccomend a 4wd though, something small because parking in Iowa City is awful at times. If you like old motorcycles there is a town called Anamosa that's not too far from Iowa City that's kinda neat to visit also. Glad to hear your daughter is going to one of the finest schools around. Go Hawkeyes!
