Look over in the JD section of this site under some F.I.T. postings. Your buddy with the 70 obviously wouldn't know what a service manual was if one hit him. Over 50 some years. No maintenance, wear, dirt, dust, rust and dried up lube in the clutch rollers are the problem. The wild guesses of connecting rods is just a wild guess. Rods aren't a problem if the operator had half a wit and changed the engine oil once and a while. An shut the gasoline valve off instead of thinning the lube oil with gasoline. These quick easy fixes with an electric start rarely work out too. Somebody gets the idea that a 12V battery, a MT40 delco starter, a bracket and a $59.99 Napa starter will work. Those cob jobs might work, if at all. If slam started on a warm day. Have a look, most of these conversions are half done jobs with a tangle of disconnected wires, no working lights or instruments. Mismatched sheet metal & dash. And most need to be boosted or pull started anyways. Those are 376 and 482 cubic inch two cylinders. They take the same cranking effort on the compression strokes as a 1128cu" or 1446cu" diesel. What's on those for cranking systems? You wouldn't think of less than a two group 31 batteries, 4/00 cables, and a Delco MT42 starter. 24V if you want it to start in weather where you would wear a coat.

Bill it still runs fine and it did not stop suddenly the noise came from in by the clutch he said he does not use it, for it might cause further damage. Thanks.

At the VERY WORST, the pony could have threw a rod or decapitated itself because of the sudden stop. You're looking at a possible electric conversion... you..just..never..know... with a pony that just stops.
