Why are man hole covers round and not square?

There is a reason.

What is it?

Gary

Glennster is correct. Up in the Northern Territory in certain locations we would not install the rectangular covers as the kids used to remove them and dump them in the sewer manhole. The round ones won't fit in through the hole.
Cheers,
Rex

My first thought is that the rain delay in planting is giving you too much time to think.

As for the question I think it is because a square hole in concrete will cause the pavement to crack away from the corners whereas since a round hole has no corners it will not crack.

So you can make rear wheel weights for Japanese tractors outta them.

The falling in stuff is the real answer, though you can still toss 'em in the storm drain if you are that serious about getting them underground

They make both but when your losing it on a rectangle in front of somebody watching a gazillion dollar fiber cable below YOU and THEY get real nervous.Round you can relax and jerk around stress free. There is a book on manhole covers in New York city from when they took pride in these type castings.Very decorative.

A square one could fall into the hole, a round one cannot
