Hoping someone out there will recognize what this mag came off of. At least I think it is a mag. Has all the components of a mag with that six cylinder distributor cap sticking out there. Any help will be appreciated.

OLD automotive generator or starter/generator in reply to DRL, 05-07-2008 16:23:33
It's NOT a magneto.

It's a generator off an OLD car, with that also drives the distributor.

Some of these were "starter-generators", which I suspect this unit IS because of the HEAVY copper bus-bar.

Maybe an old "REMY"????

If you can get your hands on a "Dyke's Automotive Encyclopedia" from the EARLY 1900's, I think you will find more information on it.

I lost my copy in a shop fire quite a few years ago, and just recently purchased a CD from an ebay seller containing scans of a few of those old books. It should be showing up any day now. I'm looking forward to having it to look up things such as this!

Its not a Magneto because it has the center post for an external coil that makes it a distributer not sure what it came off of though. Walt

Ummm, Walt. . . That post on the cap is for the secondary and doesn't mean it's not a magneto. Look at an International H4 mag for an example.

Don't know what this one is from, but it looks very much like a magneto to me, with the post for the other end of the secondary on the cap, rather than the typical battery ignition coil.

Excuse the interruption. Needed to reply to the first post to recover the board. Thank you, Chris
