What size drill bitt do I use for 5/16 tap?

Drill press or shaky hand? Makes a difference. Use chart for a start, then make up your mind. If hold is too big, will strip out. If too small tap may break or become too tight to turn.

Rule of thumb. Tap drill size= diameter minus the pitch.

If you don't have a F drill, you can use a 13/64 drill and it'll turn out just the same.

That's 17/64 Don. 13/64 is used for 1/4 -20

Size "F" which if my carbon based RAM is working tight is .257 inchs.
