I've learned a lot from reading this forum. So I thought I might ask all you well-informed folks another question.
We want to get a GPS system. We like to haul our tractors to the shows, which is often in an area we are not familar with and we like to travel with our 5th wheel. I'm also involved in genealogy, which means I'm often looking for old homesteads or family cemeteries. If possible I would like a system that could be used for both. Would like stay below $500.00 if possible! I need the system to allow me to get the coordinates of a old tractor, cemetery or old cabin, so others could find them. I don't care much about weigh as long it is less than a pound. I have no need for MP3, cell phone and other bells, whistles. I welcome any of your comments or suggestions, Pro or con.
thanks very much!
Harry

I have the Magellan Maestro 3250 bought it at Circuit City for $300 $100 off the reg. cost. It not only talks to me but I can talk to it most of the time. Only problem I have is it always leads me around the main streets in town sometimes its a pain but most of the time it works great. press a button (well the screen) and up comes your coordinates. If you take a different route it recalculate on the spot.
Walt Real simple to learn and use. I like the 3D straight up mode so you can see where you are going at all times plus any side streets. It is programmable with SD cards and comes with the 48 states all cities even my neighbor driveway and Hi. AK. and Porta Rico. When I ordered it I asked how I drive to Porta Rico.

Got the Street Atlas one for my laptop. Love it! Nice big screen, easy to use, right at $100 for the software and receiver unit! Greg

I have one of the less expensive Magellan units (it was about $220 at Costco) and it has been bullet proof for me for about two years. I use it almost every day, have never updated squat, and never had a problem.
I recently bought some cheap tractor stuff on an on-line auction from a place about 3 hours away. I plugged the address and zip in- bingo- it talked me the whole way down, right to the door-then talked me home when I hit HOME. Within this decade, I think every car will have one.

If I was going to be on the road a lot, I would get one. They work good most of the time and are easy to use. I would get the best I could afford. But for the little I go places like that I just go to google maps and print what I need. It's much better than map-quest. Just my cheap yankee opinion.

At my day job lots of people buying the Garmins from Amazon. I looked at them and would not go with anything less then NUVI 350.

The devices seem to work well and are good at recalculating should you miss a turn. I am still stuck in the old days and continue to use my Road Atlas. May consider getting one for Mother's Day that way no more discussions about taking the "wrong turn" :)

I have a Garmin that I like really well. Make a note though that all of them I have seen are basicly for a car or truck without a trailer. They can get you into an area you may not want to be with a trailer on the back.

My TomTom indicates "no thoroughfare" roads with a dash down the middle of them. Good indication of places you might not be able to get back out of. Especially handy in a strange city at night (always leave yourself a way out)

I have a Tom-Tom and totally like using it. I think current location is always displayable (Cemetary). For the money, they are excellent.
