Electrical Question

I have an Allis WD45. When operating with a fully charged 6V battery I get the following readings on my Ammeter. (it actually reads the same with an old weak battery, but I have already replaced that)

Normal: Shows a charge of an AMP or two
Fast Charge: Shows a charge of about 8 AMPS
Lights On: Shows a discharge of about 8 AMPS

I am concerned about the inability to charge the battery when the lights are on. Is this normal?

If it is not normal where would you start (gauge, switch, generator, regulator, wiring)?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Paul from Mn.
A volt meter would be a better choice to monitor battery state of charge. It is more important to know that your 6 V. battery has at lest 6.3 volts while the lights are on. Charging voltage should be at least 7V. The amp meter is just an indication of charge current while a volt meter is an indication of battery state of charge.
Guido.

Check the grounding of the switch and resistors in the battery box. A poor ground hurts charging.

My thought is check for a short in the light wiring, on a good day you will only charge 10-12 amps with a good generator, so we counted on the generator to at least hold us even with the lights on. Your gen brushes might be worn, but you are charging in both positions a little low but charging, norm= 3amps, fast=11amps

Assuming the lights are original, that is no extra ones added, you probably need to adjust the third brush in your generator to a little higher output so that with the lights on at half to full throttle the ammeter shows only a slight charge. Good luck,
Paul

Lets review this a little. On my Farmall A I had a hard time getting the Generator to charge at all. Had it rebuilt at an old time tractor shop . It wouldnt charge until the lights were insalled and now it charges all the time. It charges at 8 volts, up to 18 amps at full throttle and less down to less than half throttle no charge at all. It seem the regulator doesn't cut it off when the battery is full. The 3rd brush is adjusted up close. Just thought this might help. Henry
